HISTORY

AN ISLAND WITH A RICH PAST

NEOLITHIC PERIOD

The history of the island of Crete begins with the Neolithic, which are found here, the first traces of human activity. Minoan Crete is still a subject of intense study. It owes its name to Sir Arthur Evans, who dubbed an entire civilization in honor of legendary King Minos. This era was characterized by a more complex architectural concept of the buildings, the development of culture and literature. Around 1450 BC, is believed by some researchers, an earthquake caused the destruction of the Minoan civilization.

ROMAN & BYZANTINE PERIOD

With the growth of Roman power in the HB. BC Crete falls under the authority of the Roman Empire. Christianity came to the island about 60 AD and with the fall of the empire the island becomes part of Byzantium. It replaced the Arabs and Venetians, whom traces can still be seen on the island. The Turkish occupation lasted until 1897, when the island finally joined the Greek mainland.

WWII & PEACE

During World War II the Germans occupied Crete. Local people organize resistance to the front. After the war and the evacuation of German troops from the island comes the long-awaited peace. A further development of tourism and agriculture makes Crete one of the most prosperous islands in Greece.
